System UUID without root

Hi,
Is there a command to query the system UUID without root same as lshal | grep "system.hardware.uuid" on RH5 and above for older linux version? (e.g.: RedHat AS 3, Suse Enterprise Server 8)

Thanks,
Tal

Running
Code:
dmidecode | awk '/UUID/ {print $2}'
shows this is nfo stored in the BIOS so you need root (and in the case of dmidecode /dev/mem access) to read it AFAIK. BTW it's
Code:
hal-get-property --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key system.hardware.uuid
so no need for grep.

Hi,

I run:
Code:
hal-get-property --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer --key system.hardware.uuid
This is what i got:
libhal.c 853 : org.freedesktop.Hal.NoSuchProperty raised
"No property system.hardware.uuid on device with id /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer"

The command was just a suggestion showing you don't need grep.
