I recently setup a syslog server running slack 10, with xwin etc... It has 1Gb of mem, 1Gb swap, and a gigantic 120Gb HDD. The server load isn't bad at all, almost as though the system is idle. However, when I attempt to view the log files which are >500Mb (limited to 512) the files never open. Any ideas why? Any ideas what could remedy this? Not even vi will open them. My guess is that it is trying to load the whole file into memory, which doesn't seem smart to me at all, can't it work in little chunks? Thanks in advance!

The kernel defaults to not recognising large amounts of memory - check to see if you need to recompile with more memory support

I understand that, but large memory in the kernel conf refers to 4Gb + doesn't it? So would that really play a role here? Also, do you know how I can check that? I don't have the original kernel config.
