Support for divx playback: weird behaviour!

How come my Suse 8.2 pro can play some files, but not others?
I successfully played some divx (.avi) files with xine. But there are a few files that xine says it uses an unsupported codec.
Likewise with quicktime mov files. Some do open, some do not.
Why? What can I do?

Yes, indeed. After trying to install every single rpm I could find and not succeeding, I found that I could play all avi with aviplay. So, xine won't bother me again.
