strange group and user set to "573" in linux-2.4.27 tree structure


I realuzed that when I do (as root) a
tar -xjf linux.2.4.27.tar.bz2
I get nearly all my files in new directory with the group and user both set to 573. Few of the

I also have this strange group/user settings with a quota-tools package.

Is it normal ? Has somebody ever seen such settings ?

THe files have the same permissions as what it was when the files were tarballed. This is normal. Just run a simple:

chown -R root:root foldername

Thaks for your reply.
I've just done the same job, and got more normal results. The mistake I may have done that I was untarring the archive as "su root" (but not real root)
Doing the job logged as a user in an allowed directory gave me normal results.

I guess the strange result might be a combination of your remark and what I have just tried. With a login as su, something is missing, so group and user might be the original group and user.
