STDIN/STDOUT question

Can someone explain me, when (and by whome) STDIN and STDOUT get defined during
system startup (ie. which are corresponding devices)?
Also I am interested if STDIN and STDOUT are "system wide" - ie. only one pair,
or every session (because of multiuser ability) has it's own pair ?

Thanks

Every process may have its own. A process can change them while running.

Thank you, I was a little bit confused -seeing my ARM board boot "over" ordinary display and also over Hiperterminal and both connections work OK.
