Speakers Through Dell Inspiron Docking Station

I've installed SuSE 8.1 on a Dell Inspiron 4000 and I can hear sounds and music through the speakers on the laptop. I cannot hear sounds or music through the speakers connected to the laptop's docking station.

I've made several observations since I've installed Linux several times on the laptop. When I install Linux while the laptop is docked I get sound through the speakers connected to the docking station.

When I install Linux on the laptop when it's standing alone and not docked, I can hear sounds through the laptop speakers. I'll power down, dock the laptop, the boot up. I can't hear sound through the docking station speakers but I can hear them through the laptop speakers.

Any ideas where to look and/or how to solve the problem? I would like to hear music through speakers connected to the docking station.

Same here!

I have a Dell Latitude D600 with 1Gb RAM running Novell Linux Desktop and again, no sound through the docking station, although the laptop speakers and headphone socket both work fine.

Any suggestions appreciated!
Chris

I found this on another thread at a different site. My Dock speakers now work, however there is interference(?) on them when I listen through the dock.

found the solution:
The issue was that by default alsa outputs on the digital output of the d/port. if you go into alsamixer and turn down "IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA" all the way, and make sure that "IEC958" is not muted, the analog port will work.
