Exclamation Sound card error

I just installed OSS because there was no ALSA driver for my sound card. I now get constantly get this error:

Sound server fatal error:
cpu overload, aborting

System sounds only work in KDE and when I try to run a CD with various programs I hear nothing

If anyone could help me with this that would be great, thanks
