Hey all.. I'm aving a problem with a slow bootup. After lilo pops up and i select linux, it brings me to the screen where it shows the OK and FAILED stuff. It doesnt show any text at all for about 30-45 seconds, then it will continue on with the normal bootup. I have linux installed on my other system and it doesnt do this. Anyone know why? Running Mandrake Linux 9.1 with stock kernel.
amd xp 2000
a7n8x deluxe mobo
768mb's ram
boot drive is an ide WD 40 gig
other drive hooked up is a WD sata drive that has dma, and uata disabled untill it finishes booting up. dont know if the drive info matters or not. only stuff on the sata drive is backup files and games.

anyways.. any other info needed, just ask. am new to linux, so will have to explain how to get the info thanks for any replies.

Don't use Mandrake 9.1 (not a great realease). Use a newer realease of Manfdrake 10 or above (10.1 = latest). Or if you whould like to run a slicker system get a Linux distro based on Debian like Ubuntu. It is a free download goto www.distrowatch.org and look it up. There are 309 distro's on www.distrowatch.org.

The reason I like Debian is because it has synaptic that uses apt-get. It allows you to upgrade you system on the fly. You can upgrade whenever you want.

hmm ok then. I'm in the process of downloading gentoo 2004.2 and gonna try that out. (prolly kill myself with how much is involved from what i've read) haha. i'm also thinking about downloading slackware 10. but doing all this on a dialup is a pain in the ass :P i hear slack 10 doesnt have very good package handling. like it wont determine what the package dependincies are... gonna be abad thing for me. i like that.

what are the failed and ok things that you see? And when exactly does it seem to stop? Mandrake by default starts a lot of things that you might not need and maybe some of those slow things down.

well i went browsing around on the distrowatch site and decided i'm gonna try out yoper instead of slack. yoper sounds pretty neat :P i think i'll take on the challenge of gentoo later on after i've succefully recompiled my own kernel and stuff.

back to the madrake thing.. it hangs right when it gets to the loading screen. sits there with a blinking cursor. after about 30 seconds, it then shows "welcome to mandrake linux blah blah" loading ect ect ect.... scrolls all the ok and failed stuff. everything passes btw.. i'll probably just forget about it and install yoper when it downloads. on a dialup woohoo. hehe.

does anyone know how to stop certain things from loading at startup? like get rid of some of the failed ok things that load up? thanks for the help so far.
