I read about someone getting their XE3 running Mandrake 8 with all APM working (even the blue standby button)

I'm using the 2.4.5 kernel, and have apm loading ok as a module. All fine so far..
apmd starts as a service ok, and I can query the version of the bios and the apm module fine - however no standby commands work (no errors - just silently ignored)
surely someone has done this manually before - is that someone here?
(fyi - XE3 is a notebook - so no 'why d'ya want apm?' ok?)
