Slack 11 Dell Latitude C600, APM Fan doesn't work

Alright guys,
I'm running slackware 11 on my dell latitude c600. I'm using the 2.6.17.13 kernel, and currently APM. I tried using acpi, but that wasn't working either. I loaded the acpi modules ac, battery, thermal, fan in my rc.local file. The problem is that my fan simply does not come on. The temp gets to the point that it's too hot to touch, and if I boot up my bios, the fan will turn on. the bios is version A14. Anyone have any ideas? I refuse to go back to windows, even though acpi is still under development.

Another question, i'm running the same on my desktop, but i cannot tell if the temp is out of control or not, do desktop fans constantly run, or do i need to be concerened about this as well?

thanks, TheAngler
