shut down open-source??

I was just reading an article on cnet and it mentioned something to the effect of how if some patents were infringed apon that they would try to shut down the open-source movement. I was just wondering if that was somehow possible, because I dont see how they can stop everyone. Either Im blind, deaf, and dumb, or they are on crack and cant see that what they are proposing is like trying to stop a river by throwing some rocks into it; it just doesnt work. Anyway, there's my 2 cents.

They could announce that looking at the river, or swimming in it and owning a river is illegal. Afther a time, most of the rivers get destroyed and rest of them go to underground.
