setting permissions for different users in ubuntu

I am using ubuntu 10.04.
I have a user on this machine which is in the admin group and has sudo powers. I have also 178 gb ext3 file system which this user have to mount every time and can read or write everything.
Now I want to make another user for my friends ,so that they can access only those files and folders that the above user want to share with them, how can I do this. In brief how to make new user and put it in a particular group and set permissions for different files and folders through terminal so that i can accomplish the above task.

Thanks.

Hi,

you can create users and groups with the adduser and addgroup commands. You can set what groups
different users are in using the usermod command.

Directory and file permsissions can be manipulated with chown and chmod.

Read the man pages (and perhaps online tutorials/howtos)for these commands and ask back here if
you have any problems.

If you want to go to then next level, finer grained control can be achieved with setfacl and friends
if the partition in question is mounted with the acl option.

Cheers,

Evo2.
