Set up Grub to define drive letters

I used to have a link either to LQ or elsewhere about how to do this (in rather simplistic terms - for simple me). Of course I can't find it and Googling this is getting me all sorts of not what I am looking for.

I have 3 machines all dual boot, Linux - PCLOS or Debian are my main OSses. On main machine, I have had to keep/use Windows XP for one game and Adobe CS. I have to use XP mostly on my media PC because my lousey TV card is not supported yet under linux And I use Windows98 on another machine for a half dozen games I will not give up no matter, pry them from my cold dead hands. So it is me and 98SE forever possibly. That is why I am looking for this Grub solution.

My main PC is getting a little long in the tooth. My tax refund is coming, time to build a new one. I don't want to bother putting Windows on it at all, waste of time. I am not buying Vista until well, ever. I cannot transfer my XP that is OEM to another machine. And the media PC has to keep its copy of XP because of the tuner card.

My 98SE is retail, full, I transfer it to lowliest computers as necessary when the former lowliest get junked. So, I need to be able to keep my current machine just the way it is except install my 98SE onto a partition of what is currently the linux drive. Just to be able to play those games, but I do love them. Can't give them up

I think the thing to do is have Grub fake out windows into believing the secondary disk is primary and C, and install to the secondary while it thinks it is C, correct? Please feel free to suggest anything else but don't forget I cannot mess with the XP install currently on C, primary disk.

You can use the map function for grub. Look at Saikee's Grub Booting tips in my signature for a good setup.

The other thing you might try now a days is try to install Win98SE into a virtual machine. God knows that system specs have increased so much the virtual machine speed lag may actually help for Win98 games (my new XP machine can't play the old games because the clock speed is too fast and I just get slaughtered by the AI).

Oh, and in case you didn't know about it, I found this great site that will update a Win98 machine without your babysitting.

Thank you. That is what I couldn't think of - "map". I will have a look at the links. I don't think I want to go virtual, this machine may not be fast enough for the newest of the 98 games in virtual mode. And the majority of them don't play well under XP either. The deal breaker is American McGee's Alice. I can't give it up, that and the ancient Tomb Raiders I need to use GLIDOS for. Classics. All

There is also a hardware solution which is probably best for dummies like me. It is an actual IDE "switch" with a key where you turn it for whichever drive. If all else fails, that will be the way I go
