Set up an email server?

Hi all

I've just finished configuring a headless debian virtual server. Things are running well, however I now need to set up email on the box.

Can anyone give me an outline on what I need to set up to allow my users to pick up email via POP and send via SMTP?

Thanks!

Well first you need to decide what MTA you want to use.. postfix, sendmail, exim, qmail or the countless others.

Then you move on to setting up pop/imap or the like. But your not really wanting our members to rewrite existing howto's that currently exist out on the web now are you?

God no. Just really asking for what I need to google for!

I think exim is already on the box. I'm used to sendmail because I use PHP. And I've heard qmail's quite good.

What would you recommend?

So, I get an MTA up and running. Do I need a seperate POP/SMTP server?

Whats after that?

Any good terms I should be googling for?

Postfix, it's got the rock hard stability of sendmail but is 1000 times easier to configure and maintain.

And once you decide what your going to go with, use that as your search term. And you don't need a separate POP server, have pop running on the mail server that will serve as the smtp server.
