Question scanner

ok, my scanner is umax astra 3400 and it work when i did xscanimage, but the damn thing won't scan beyond like 5cm, so do anyone know how to get it scan all the way?
and my xsane does not catch my device... that is weird. will, i do not care about xsane but can anyone tell me how to get my scanner explore the world beyond 5cm?

ok i found out that i have to move my plustek.conf file into the /home/punkshark directory to run xsane, and yes i can adjust the length and width, but do anyone know how to do that without xsane? so i can set a default?
