Save Sound Setup

Mandrake 9.1 boots up without sound.
Taskbar has Aurn-Audio Mixer and Kmix
The Kmix is Muted at boot up.
Have moved sliders over in Audio mixer to CD and KSCD plays audio discs. Save .
On next reboot have to reset Audio Mixer and un mute Kmix
Is there any way of saving sound configuration so that audio works without performing resetup
Is this one of Linux funny ways

Log in as root. Try setting and saving volumes. Log out, log in as normal user?
Its worth a try anyway.
