samba: network neighborhood got hang!

hi all!
previously i posted a question about the security configuration in samba....well got that figured out now (thanks to the forum)...but i have another problem with samba now that i couldnt figure out....curious folks using the network keep clicking the samba workgroup icon in network neighbourhood.Their windows 98 computers arent configured to use samba and when they clicked the icon, network neighbourhood got hang (they kept seeing the hourglass thing).Only a few people are allowed to use samba and got their windows configured for this,so they dont have this problem, of course.

how can i prevent this??
In my previous post, i stated that maybe i could somehow make samba invisible to other users except the ones that can use samba...but i dont know how to do this. Maybe there are other solutions??

THANKS!!

First of all - securing samba by configuring/not configuring win clients is kinda scary. Masking it behind subnets or 'workgroup' names can be convenient, but easily skipped by users.

Here's some stuff to toy with in your smb.conf:
[global]
restrict anonymous = yes

Well. OK it's only one. Let me know how it works out.

Thanks....i've added restrict anonymous in smb.conf...right now my hands are full configuring windows clients for samba (and also setting up mailman) i have about 100 over users in the network..do you think it's worth it to configure all of the windows machines just so that a few
users can use samba? You did say it was scary not to..

thanks again! i'll get back with positive result soon , i hope..

Hang with Windows XP explorer

I read your posting from a while back, and I am having
a problem with my PC, where I can hang windows explorer
when trying to connect to a samba share.

It does not always hang, sometimes I connect ok, and can
move files back and forth.

I never did anything special on the windows XP m/c. When
I try to connect to the samba share I type in a user/pswd that
is allowed to connect and usually it works.

My question to you is there something else I need to make sure
of on my windows pc (any special service) that needs to be running?

Thanks,

I am using XP pro, and RedHat linux 9. Not sure the version of samba, but it is the one release with 9.

Kevin
