Running X apps with out window manager

How do I make a linux box just boot an X application but no windows manager?

Eg. When the computer starts, I want it to just run gmplayer or xine.
I still want the chance to manually boot gnome (or something a little lighter). If that is possible, what command would do that?

You can using the framebuffer driver, if compiled
Code:
mplayer -vo fbdev file.avi

oops misunderstood the question...

you need to run an X apps with no window manager, still with X (the method above works without X11)

then
xinit /usr/bin/mplayer file.avi -- :0

something like this
