running an executable always starts with black background terminal

Hi-

I like the white background in xterm but when I do ./progname the term is black.
Is there a way I can set xterm like when it initially launches from desktop menu when running my programs? It is the same behavior with xfceterminal.

I am using xterm because function keys are detected in cobol but with xfceterminal they are intercepted for other reasons.

hi-

I am going to move this to opencobol. maybe there is something I am missing. I can color individual lines but not change the entire color of the background.
