Ruined IMAP server ---- where are the messages?

I destroyed my server by mistake (I deleted /var ) ---- I've recreated /var but nothing works yet. I need to back up only the email message files but I can't actually find them. I was running exim and uw-imapd. If I can back them up to another box, I'll happily start the server from scratch --- but, as said, I can't find the messages. They aren't in the /home/user directories ----- any ideas??
The server was a Debian Woody box.
Thanks

Uh, any mail would have been in /var/mail
which actually would have been a symlink to /var/spool/mail..........

oh well --- just as I thought. There's no escaping the fact that the messages have gone. A very very big "ooops"
Thanks for the reply
