rh9 Gnome configuration

O.k. This should be simple. With sawfish, there was a way to change the display mode of windows such that if they were moved or resized, the contents were not drawn during said procedures. I cannot figure out how to enable this feature under gnome in RH9. I believe that the windows manager was changed from sawfish to metacity or some such thing... Does this feature no longer exist? It seems as though RH9 is a lot less configurable gui-wise out of the box, when compared to 7.3....
