Repeating X job on boot, RedHat 7.3

Hello all
I need a bit of help. One of our Linux machines (running RedHat Linux 7.3), is having some trouble on reboot. It keeps trying to load the X-window login screen unsuccessfully, then re-tries and re-tries ad infinitum. If I look remotely at the "top" command, I can see the job "X" running for short periods repeatedly, each using about 20% of the CPU. The job then goes away, and then appears again with a different PID.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what may be causing this, and how to fix it?
Thanks very much
Martin

Check your syslog and /var/logX* logs?

Probably not what you want to hear but since running GNU/Linux is all about performance, protecting assets and providing services in a continuous, stable and secure way I would like to emphasise Red Hat Linux maintenance and errata support ended on April 30 of 2004 for all YES ALL Red Hat Linux releases (not RHEL) so unless you're a seasoned admin and need to worry about legacy applications, update using Fedora Legacy (if available still) while you plan your migration and make it snappy.
If you like what RH provides but don't want to pay for RHEL you could run CentOS. If you like what RHL provided then you could run Fedora Core but remember that bleeding edge means *you* do the bleeding. Else check out the many "choose a distro" threads here.
