Unhappy Remote RH over network.

I have a Redhat box (7.3) at home with XP on the same network.

Can I remote control (like using PC Anywhere) the redhat box using XP or even another redhat box?

And if so how?

only thing i can think of is using VNC, but thats still flakey depending on the connection and how you installed it. during windows under the same network its fine. never tried it or install over linux. http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html

I set up VNC running on my RedHat 7.3 box on the local LAN by following the steps at:

http://www.frankhilliard.com/remotelinux.cfm

I can run vncviewer against this no problem (remember to choose display 1) from WIndows 2000. I have also accessed this box via an 8Mb pretty congested WAN link (NT4.0) and also via dial up (Win98 + 56k modem) and whilst it wasn't exactly zippy, it wasn't any slower than anything else, and much faster than pcAnywhere on NT.

Tip - Use TightVNC (http://www.tightvnc.org) you'll see about a 30% performance increase over VNC. Over a LAN it's hardly noticeable but over dial up it flies in comparison. You might also want to consider tunnelling it over Zeebeedee (haven't used), Stunnel (have used, works fine) or using ZVNC (haven't used - http://home.attbi.com/~davedyer/znc/zvnc.html)

I do this and it's much simpler than you think. However, I'm not sure if
your network is the same as mine.

I dial in to the work's network and then can access the machine from the
IP number.

I have PuTTY on my windows machine to let me get the command prompt up and
a nice program called XThinPro - which is bascially an X server for
windows. The evaluation copy has a timeout of 1 hour - but that's normally
enough for what I want to do.

So, start XThinPro (after configuring it) and then in the PuTTY prompt
type
csh
which gives the c shell - then type
setenv DISPLAY 10.1.1.1:0.0 -

this is your IP address (which can be found by typing who on the PuTTY
terminal) with :0.0 - this part makes reference to sessions and desktop -
so in this case, session 0 with desktop 0.

Then type in a command to bring up a particular program (kmail is a good
example) or alternatively, you can run the whole Xsession from
/etc/X11/Xsession & (the ampersand means you can keep your prompt for
use). Depending on your network speed the XThinPro should start to run KDE
or whatever your default window manager is.
