So, how can I get a consol in a higher resolution? The default is 70Hz. I can change it lower, if I change the 'vga=' param. in the lilo.conf, but I cant go higher. And another question: is it possible to get 100Hz in X, cause I cant go above 88Hz. Toma
don't know what distro you are using. I have recently installed Red Hat V7.1. In this installation, the software probes for and finds my Monitor. During this probing, I get info on both vertical and horizontal refresh rates and screen resolution. I can manually change this if I wish.
If your distro doesn't do a good job of probing for your monitor, you will have to specify its parameters, e.g., vertical refresh rate, horizontal refresh rate and resolution. I found all this information about my monitor at the URL of the manufacturer.
If you use the wrong parameters, your monitor won't work correctly and could even become damaged.
Hope this helps. If not, provide more info on your monitor and what distro of Linux you are running. I may not be able to help, but this info will help others to address your questions.
I'm using rh 7.0. During the install it asks for the X's resolution, isn't it? Well, what I really want is to get Qu**e at above 80Hz. And for that I have to change the consols's res, I think. Once I saw Qu**e running at 112Hz. The guy who made it used the SVGAtext. He changed a line in the textconf.conf, he changed the dotclock param., then switched to that mode, I don't remember what was it, and after it he got a nice, high refresh consol and Qu**e. What I now more is that your consol is in 640x480 and Qu**e at 720x400.
But thanks for the info
Well I'm not clear on what you want. There are basically 3 variables here:
1. Screen resolution in pixels (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 etc.)
2. Number of colors per pixel (256, 32768, 1M+)
3. Vertical Refresh rate in hz. 60hz, 70, 85 etc.
In all cases you have a combination of factors, relative to what the video adapter can support, and what the monitor can support. So basically you need to know what combination of resolution (1.) and colors (2.) you want, and the support for that by your video card.
The card will then support some number of vertical refresh rates. The assumption is that the faster the vertical refresh, the easier on the eyes, so you usually want to go as high as the monitor will support, so in this case you need to know what the monitor will support. Setting the vertical refresh higher than what the monitor can support could potentially damage it, so you want to be very careful with that.
If you know all these settings, you should be able to get xfree86 to do what you want. Take a look here:
Well, that's the point, that I want to change not under X. I want to change the consol's refresh, and I hope, that if I change it's refresh, then Quake will be at a higher refresh too.
I don't understand what Quake is.

What kind of consule do you have?
What is the vertical refresh rate of your console?
What is the horizonatl refresh rate of your console?
What screen resolutions does your video card support?
What screen resolutions does your console support?
How many colors do you want?

I am using the word "console" instead of monitor, since I think that is the word you are using.

Well, I'm sorry but my english isn't so good at all. Quake is the best game ever . I used the 'consol' for a thing that you use to type your instruction for your linuxbox (like login, start applications, start the X window, you know, that black thing with white chara4cters , well the stdin). And I want to give it a higher refresh rate. In default, when my pc boot up, and want me to log in, it is at 640x480@70. And I want it at a higher refres. When I start quake, it switches on to a 720x400 mode at 70Hz. And I want it at higher refresh too. I know that my eyes don't see more than 30 frames per second, but let it giva a try .
I dont' know the horizontal refr.rates for these modes, 'cause I don't know how to check it. My monitor only shows the resolution and refresh rate. But under windows I can do a 640x480@100 even, as well 720x400@100 too. So my machine is able to do it. I got a nice riva-tnt, and a Mag 795fd(vert.ref. 55-160, hor.ref. 34-95).
I hope this time I was clear. Thank you for your patient,
then when you boot that will show you all your available resolutions, and then youll see how high your refresh can get... on my console i run the 'a' selection.. i forget what it is, but it looks sweet, but i dont play games so i dont know how thatll work...
make sure you run /sbin/lilo to activate changes before rebooting
oh yeh, the limited warranty on this advice just ran out, so be careful with lilo...
Once a friend of mine used rh7.0, and he tried out this 'vga=ask', and tried all the modes. And he got a high refresh, about 80Hz. But when I installed rh7.0, it din't worked on my machine . This is why I'm trying to find out what does that 'vga=ask' do if I change it. I don't understand how it is possible that it isn't worked for me. Is there another rh7.0 user who tried this already?
I used the vga-ask before and was able to get better resolution on my monitor. This may not be as technical as you wished for but the vga=ask option causes the kernel to do a scan of all of your available monitor settings. You then choose the one that you like and it will continue booting.
Once you have decided which one that you like. (Say you decided that you liked the third option.), you would just enter vga=3 instead of vga=ask in your lilo.conf file. Once you have done this, your system will boot with your chosen settings each time.
hmmm... is there any particular reason why you're messing with the refresh rate? if you're trying to play quake, then it sounds more like you would be trying to improve the frame buffer rate. there's a big difference between the two.
