redhat kernel tuning

I am trying to cull many of the extraneous peramaters of a kernel in an old linux router. I have configures bsd servers in the past but never a linux kernel. I figured it would be similar however i have been unamle to find the "GENERIC" config file in /usr/src/linux.-@.@ . The command line configuration progam does not suite me.
I would prefer to use a text editer.
can i do this? where is that file. Or worst case is there a gui that shows all the paramaters on the screen at once.

this typing Y or N or M thing is just to stultifying for my tastes. I found myself spacing out 20 minutes into it and then worring that i may have missed something.
thanks

There might be a config-2.4.xx-xx file in your /boot/ directory. If it is, that's the config file RedHat used to compile the vanilla kernel. Copy that to /usr/src/linux-2.4 and rename it ".config" .

Then, you can use make menuconfig or make xconfig to pare out what you don't need.
