I been trying to install Red Hat 7.0 from CD onto my IBM PC300GL. Old Machine! PII 266, 32 MB RAM, 20GB drive and 2MB Video Card. Whenever I try install the GUI interface does not come. Instead the command line. Help why?
There may be a problem with your video card. Linux may not be able to detect your card. Try RH 7.1 or Rh 7.2. Or you may have to pass some special parameters to it.
Is there any way in which I can get the installer to use my graphics card? As WinLinux supports it (and it's 100% compatible with Red Hat 7.0) during installation. Can you tell me if Linux does have the driver for it. It's aCirrus Logic 5465 AGP on board Graphics card. And if so how may I load the driver during install time?
what do I exactly do in expert mode? I thought expert mode was command line too? I'm just worried it'll start asking me weird questions about cylinders and etc.. which I Won't have a clue too.
You can try the text mode. Its not tough. it prety easy. only thing is that you have to use the keyboard more. but its not that tough. you can give it a try. thats the easier thing to do.
Ok I'll try, the text mode, but just one question. Seeing as the most probable reason to why the GUI mode does not startup during installation, will it work after install? I mean for instance will Linux be able to detect my video card afterwards?
you might want to also check out: www.linux-laptop.net
great resource for laptops running linux. and always www.xfree86.org for configuring X and checking compatibility.
I've just checked out that site tricky, and from the first release of X my cirrus logic 5465 was supported, though I've given up hoope of trying to install with gui, I'm sure that with the configuration I should be able to get X up and running in no time.
But if so... why on earth did RH 7.0 installation did not detect my video card? It can't be the monitor either because thats supported too. I won't be to shocked if no one can figure it out because even to me it seem weird.
I forgot to mention that some distros such as the old old old Corel funnily enough did start on Gui, so just a shame that Red Hat didn't. Still not a severe loss, just means a hell lot more time in front of the pc!
most likely you should be able to run Xconfigurator and configure since the video is supported. most likely redhat didn't properly detect or load generic drivers so you can do a gui install.. text mode should be fine and you should be able to setup X while installing..
