program makes terminal stop respond

Whenever I try starting openvpn from the terminal with , openvpn --config ***.conf, then it starts normally, but it seems to make the terminal just stop reponding. I have to cancel the program with ctrl+c to make it relenquish the terminal. The script for this was missing from /etc/rc3.d, and I tried to copy a script from another computer, but it have lots of errors to give out. Does anyone know how to make a program that takes over the terminal run without taking it over?

Put an & symbol at the end of your command, so openvpn --config ***.conf &
This will make the process run in the background.
To send a process that's already running to the background, press ctrl-z, then type bg.

Hope this helps!

I SO should have known that... I used && all the time to run long commands in order. Thank you for making me realize I should lookup these special syntax commands...
