Problems with MySQL 4.1.3 beta

Hi, I have installed MySQL Server and Client 4.1.3 Beta. When I tried to set the root password with the commands: mysqadmin -u root password 'new password'
and mysqladmin -u root -h localhost.localdomain password 'new password'

It returns me this:

[sergio@localhost mysql]$ mysqladmin -u root password *********
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

[sergio@localhost mysql]$ mysqladmin -u root -h localhost.localdomain password 'new password'
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

The same if I try to do it in root.
Could anybody help me please? TK.

using password: NO
My guess is that the first time root does not have a password. So do as serz says and just press <Enter> al the password prompt.
