problem with the video when I lift my laptop lid back up

I have encountered a problem with the video reappearing normally when I lift up my laptop's lid after having it closed for any length of time. Part of the screen will be obscured by flashing blank patterns of color (seems to be mostly blue and white). I can control how much of the screen is obscured by moving the mouse cursor; the blank white area moves vertically with it.

I have found a partial practical solution on my own. At first, I thought the only way to restore the video was to log out and back in; then I discovered that if I close and lift the lid a second time, the video will reappear normally. (I've lost track of whether that works every single time, but in any case almost every time.) So, I know how to get rid of the problem when it happens, but does anyone know how to prevent it from happening at all?

My laptop is a ThinkPad T400. My distro is MX 18. Any other information needed?

I admit, the possibility that the screen's going bad hadn't occurred to me.

There could be a multitude of reasons for this, depends on what the settings are for "close lid": sleep, hibernate etc. Perhaps not enough swap space, slow drive, ram all used up, not enough graphics adapter ram or sub par graphics adapter. It's obviously not able to fully refresh ASAP. With KDE, I can right click on the desktop and select: Refresh Desktop
I doubt it's a monitor issue.
