Please repeat your question without abbreviations. You know what's the problem, but you are communicating poorly with terms like 'pv' & 'vg'

BTW, Red Hat (Enterprise Linux?) 3 is now a very old OS. Is there some reason why you are still running on it. Is the box as old?

For starters, what is in the Volume Group that is failing to activate? And do you have any idea at this point how the Physical Volume is corrupted and how it got corrupted? Do you have backups of that data? Does that VG contain just user data or is it something that is required to run the OS?

You indicated "rescue mode". Are you booted into rescue mode from your install CD/DVD, or were you dropped into "disk recovery mode" on your reboot attempt (when the system failed to mount the missing Logical Volumes)? (I'm not even certain that "disk recovery mode" was part of RHEL3.)

If the VG contains just user data, remounting the root filesystem read-write (if needed); removing the mounts for the affected Logical Volumes from /etc/fstab; chkconfig'ing off any services that might need that data; and then rebooting (preferably) into single user mode for your attempt at repair would be the easiest route.

Also, if you are on RHEL3, you may have LVM1 on your system. LVM1 was far less robust than LVM2 and I wouldn't even attempt to repair it. I've had a few bad experiences with LVM1. If LVM1, I'd reinstall from scratch (and upgrade to a newer level as saghi indirectly suggested), reinstall your apps, and restore your data.

ps. using terms like PV, VG and LV are fine (and I know what they mean), but the first time you use them in a post it is probably good practice not to abbreviate them. After that first use an abbreviation is ok, but capitalization helps in readability.
