problem changing the default soundcard

I just got a Behringer u-control uca202 - class complient usb audio interface. Uses the snd-usb-audio driver.
It works fine with Audacity, but since the headphone port on this laptop pretty much sucks, I'd like to use it as default soundcard when connected. - I'd also like to use it with REAPER using wineasio - for that purpose I think I only have to convince Jack to use it.

# asoundconf list
List of available sound cards:
*crickets...tumbleweed*

#_

Not even the onboard realtek card shows up.
What gives?
Code:
cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xf7eb8000 irq 5
 1 [default ]: USB-Audio - USB Audio CODEC
Burr-Brown from TI USB Audio CODEC at usb-0000:00:1d.1-1, full s

This is an eee-pc... I should probably take this to the eeeusers forum, but I don't have an account there yet.

alright, I managed to change it, but it's not really the preferred process:

edit
/usr/share/alsa.conf

change:
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0

to 1

restart alsa:
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart

After that it seems to be the default system wide with the exception of wineasio/jack which still insists on using the on-board...

Well, I guess it wouldn't be too complicated to write a script that does that as a temporary solution.

man jack

Who would have though of that!
Just starting jack with hw:1 does it...

Well there was my answer... just need to start jack from the command line. qjackctl doesn't seem to provide the option which hardware to use for what, which is odd as jackd seems to be able to handle multiple sound devices quite elegantly.

Sooo
I just worked around the real problem. I still can't actually just change the default soundcard system wide.
