playing midi files?

i've got a 2.6.14.5 kernel with generic midi driver compiled as a module(snd-virmidi). the module loads fine with modprobe snd_virmidi and some other midi modules that it must need are also loaded. then i try to play a .mid file with kmidi and it appears to be processing the file, but i dont hear anything. without the drivers loaded, kmidi doesnt seem to do anything when i try to play a midi file, so the drivers must be doing something. how can i get midi files to play? do i need to create some midi devices or something?
