php won't connect mysql...

Hallo

I have had some really dificultys with debian package mysql, and I decide to compile it my self. Now is much, much better but there is still one error, I cannot connect using php to mysql database.

The problem is, I think, with php extensions.

when I look at a processes and then lsof of apache
then I get:

lsof -p 23259 | grep mysql
apache2 23259 root mem REG 3,5 40936 1491431 /usr/lib/php4/20050606/mysql.so
apache2 23259 root mem REG 3,5 1144656 4555020 /usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.14.0.0

how to fix this stuff, or must I compile php also?!

Information that I get using phpinfo()

mysql
MySQL Support enabled
Active Persistent Links 0
Active Links 0
Client API version 4.1.15
MYSQL_MODULE_TYPE external
MYSQL_SOCKET /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
MYSQL_INCLUDE -I/usr/include/mysql
MYSQL_LIBS -L/usr/lib -lmysqlclient

But now I use new mysql version 5.0.22 and not 4.1.15
How to tell PHP/Apache to use new Mysql not old?? Is there any way to reconfigure php, without compiling it?!
PHP version is 4.4.0 and Apache 2.0.55

thanks in advance
