Actually I'm almost in the same boat, PM7 does NOT support ext3, and I'm thinking of resizing a few things. Anyone know of better software?

Not unless you used a file system that supports this kind of thing: Such as Ext-3.

What you *can* do (other than copying the whole thing to a different drive and/or computer, which is easy if you have the drive/space) is to remember what you've customized from your original install. In my case, I usually only have to save /etc, /root /homes, /usr/local, and perhaps some things in /usr/src. Often there isn't much stuff there. You then can simply re-install your distribution (maybe it would be a good time to get the latest and greatest anyway) and then restore those directories.

Thank guys, but the least I can do is re-installing my linux distribution.

this is how my system looks:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 4.8G 604M 3.9G 13% /
/dev/hda1 99M 8.5M 85M 10% /boot
/dev/hda2 3.5G 1.4G 1.9G 42% /home
none 77M 0 77M 0% /dev/shm

And I really want those extra 3 G to be transferred to the /dev/hda2 partition. Is there any other way to do this?

Here are some things to try:

1) Logical Volume Manager (LVM). I'm not sure if it will help or not.

2) If /homes has a lot of directories of stuff in it, you could probably move a few directories over to the other partition, then create a "soft link" to it where it used to be so nobody will tell much difference. This is a kludge, but it should work.

you can also adjust the partitions.

man parted

and look for the resize option

With the current published capabilities of Gnu Parted, you can only extend an ext2 partition in to the free space after it.

This means you could remove hda3 partition, grow the hda2 partition to where ever you want it, then put your hda3 partition back in what remains.

The only problem is, it looks like you have a lot of stuff on your hda3 partition to backup and restore.

I have used Parted before, it looks scary but seems to work well.

Hi
stumbled over this whilst googling;
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...ct/ext3/README
under topic header
How to move back from ext3 to ext2

it describes how to go back from an ext3 to an ext2 filesystem
maybe something to experiment with and use parted after. Haven't tried it myself tho.

regards
