Partitioning harddrive + Keeping Linux?

Can I partition unused partitions and leave a linux installation in its other partitions, or would this lead the bootloader to fail because of changed values?
I have 3 primary non-linux partitions, and 1 extended partition, containing the linux partitions.

Wouldn't any new extended partitions get new, higher hdXN numbers?
If so then you should be fine. Lilo or grub would still
find your linux boot partition at hda5 or whatever.
If your partition table did shuffle the numbers around,
you'd need to fix your boot loader and your fstab.

Not a real answer, but maybe some help.

Exactly--as long as the partition number for linux does not change, the bootloader will still find it.

Post the output of fdisk -l and tell us exactly what changes you are considering.
