Lightbulb Oracle for UNIX / Linux Admin

Hi,

We have Oracle 11g in our prod environment and I am on the role of UNIX Admin.

I have not worked on Oracle and done much in that area.

What do you think a UNIX / Linux Admin must know about Oracle Enterprise (DB) running on the Linux Servers?

Can you suggest any check list?

Thanks,
Dev.

It depends on your requirement.
If you don't know what you are losing, you never feel bad about that until you know one day.

Its really down to what you need to know to do your job and interact with the DBAs successfully.
Start with the basics:

1. where is it installed (inc Oracle sw and the DB and any associated files) Ditto Ora user accts/groups.
2. how/where are the backups done. Could you restore the backup if reqd (just OS level; leave Oracle recovery to DBA)
3. learn how to stop/startup DB service; DBAs likely have a script.
4. apply the above to the app SW that accesses the DB.

That little lot should keep you busy and be enough for a start.

As addition to chrism.
5. Learn how to check if oracle is accessible from the network.
5a. Is the listener running.
5b. On which port is it listening.
5c. Is the client configured correctly.

Cheers
