if it installed properly you can run a command like 'whereis [commandname]'. in fedora core 6 you can _easily_ install software with .rpm files. please see this link on managing software in fedora core. for the file you tried to install ive never heard of it, try and search for a rpm format of it to easily install.

which player did you use? i figured you could watch avi's out of the box with fedora but i guess not. maybe visit http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html to download the codecs, the instructions are on the same page. these codecs should work with other programs not just mplayer if you choose to download the player also.

I'm kind of guessing since I've never used fedora, but it looks like it can't find mplayer in the repositories you have setup. You'll probably need to add some extra ones. That will take someone more knowledgable about yum than I am, but I'd bet there's instructions somewhere on a fedora website.

sounds like mcmillan is right to me.
check out this page. notice in the long list on the left there is mplayer and afew of its components. it looks like you can click the specific ones and download the fedora core 6 RPM for it. once you have the rpm it should be easy to install with yum. i would say bookmark that page, it looks pretty good for FC6 rpms in the future.

good luck
