no sound on sis onboard sound kernel 2.4.18


ok i cant get my sound to wrok every time i boot up it gives me this error about couldnt find /dev/dsp . what can can i do to get my sounds working have tryed updating my kernel but im not really the smartest at it and i tryed appling the patch but it seems as though nothing happend please help.

here is what the error message looks like

What SiS chipset is it?
Do "lspci -vv" for all the info.

heres what it says in my mobo book, mainboard uses the SiS 735 chipset...mainboard has a built-in AC87 Codec, and i dont know what you mean by

In a terminal type (as root) "lspci -vv" (without the quotes).

ok i tryed that and it said it couldnt find that command thats why i asked if that was what i was supposed to type.

Ok, bad news I'm afraid, the SiS7012 sound controller isn't suported, SiS have been promising a driver for over 12 months and have yet to deliver, you can try alsa or get a supported pci sound card.

how would i go about trying alsa? i really want my sound to work with out spending a lot of money.
