no sound - mandrake 9.2

Hi,

I'm a complete n00b so please bear with me .

I'm having a weird sound problem the I think I mucked up when I was trying to get Audacity to work. For the most part I don't get any sound. When I lauch KDE, there is no KDE "jingle" and I get no sound watching videos (DVDs, mpegs, wma, etc.) using Xine. The weird thing is that when I do a sound test using KDE aRTs Sound Test, I hear the KDE "jingle." The other wierd thing is on my wife's login, sound is there - KDE startup "jingle" and Xine.

edit: xmms works fine...wtf???

Anybody have any insight as to what could be causing this? I can imagine that it's probably a setting somewhere but I can't find it.

TIA,
Ross
