mv: preserving times / setting permissions (FAT32)

Code:
[xxx@localhost ~]$ mv last50000.txt $OLDPWD/
mv: preserving times for `/work/software/linux/binary/fedora3/last50000.txt': Operation not permitted
mv: setting permissions for `/work/software/linux/binary/fedora3/last50000.txt': Operation not permitted
/work has a FAT32 volume mounted. Rest ist ext3.

from fstab:
Code:
/dev/hda2 /work vfat rw,auto,users,exec,umask=000 0 0
How can I preserve the timestamps and permissions?

Thanks,

Samsara

You can't. FAT32 filesystems do not support permissions or timestamps. It will record creation date (as in when you move the file over), but that's it.

Sorry, I know about permissions. I wasn't thinking when I asked the question. But the creation date of the file should be conserved?

cp, by contrast, doesn't complain, but it also fails to preserve creation time.

Thanks,

Samsara

Edit: or last modified, or whichever date it is that FAT32 uses!

cp -p

does the job.

That, apparently, was inaccurate, for which I apologise.

Does anybody know whether the reason is with the kernel implementation of FAT32 or with GNU cp and mv?

Thanks,

Samsara
