Question Mounting samba shares as they become avaliable

Is there some way that I can set up my linux box (slack 8) to mount samba shares whenever they are needed, and then unmount them when the hosts go offline? I am trying to set up an account for people who know basically nothing about linux, but need access to windows shares on my network. Perhaps there is a simpler way I'm overlooking also?
