mod_rewrite not rewriting urls

I thought it was about time I had a fiddle with mod_rewrite. I decided to do things properly and pulled down the freshest apache sources, compiled and installed. mod_rewrite is statically linked and appears in the list given by httpd -l. All fine.

I have the RewriteEngine On in my httpd.conf and then in the VirtualHost block for the site in question I have the following rewrite rule:
Code:
        RewriteRule ^/channel/(.*) /showchannel.php?ci=$1
I have experimented with numerious combinations including and excluding the ^ and / at the start.. Other things.. I have experiemented with including a RewriteBase / directive within my <Directory /> and I've even tried embedding it within a VirtualHost section.. but still no cigar.

Incidentally, I have my RewriteLogLevel set to 9 and the rewrite.log file remains empty, which implies to me that it's not even attempting a rewrite, so there's surely something else I need to have turned on somewhere.

Any plans?

All fixed..

well mostly - I'm just going thru the sources updating hrefs. Unfortuantely there isn't one thing which sticks out as having been the solution here - sorry guys for the dull posts. I'm putting all my rewrite directives in a VirtualHost context, and making sure that all my paths start with a plain old '/' . I actually found that the path to my stylesheet began with './' (bleeurrgh) and that broke stuff too.

Anyway, tune in next week for another edition of 'Chris spends a Saturday night breaking things'.
