About 5Mb and probably. If you want to know the minimum amount of space you should give over to Linux... well, that all depends on what you'll be using it for.

Very basic use, just to have UNIX at home - write perl and shell scripts and some C, C++ and Java programs.

Is one or two GB is enough for that? I have a free 4GB partition but I use Windows a lot (at least for now) and I want to keep as much space as possible.

What about the SXGA (1400x1050) support?

A couple of gigs should be more than enough. You might have to specifically not install things like wordprocessors, and others, but yeah, that should be good. I used to only give Linux ~3Gb, and it was as happy as Larry. As for the display, that all depends on your laptop. I have my desktop system running at 1600x1200 and that's with a GeForce2, so if your hardware can run at 1400x1050, then I'm sure, given the right info, Linux (or more specificaly, X) can run at that. What hardware does your lappy have, graphics wise?

From the Device Manager, the Display adapter is called "RAGE MOBILITY-M AGP". and it is a SXGA notebook.

I guess I'll make it 3GB as I need to use the Star Office and see how it works.
