Yeah, that's the right protocol. It doesn't often work in older netscapes < 6, but works fine in Mozilla evidently. It shouldn't matter that it's optical. I got that info from mine (which is an old MS wheel mouse), by searching through the archives here and from about the third hit from google.
If you're using the USB-to-PS/2 converter on your laptop, try getting rid of that and plugging it directly into USB. That's what I had to do before it would work right.
Weirdalaboola....Say that three times and try again. Once you realise that didn't do anything there is a standard readme in the kernel doc dir that may help. In RH7.2, the path should be something close to this;
/usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10/Documentation/input/input.txt OR
/usr/src/linux-2.4.7-10/Documentation/usb/input.txt
Also, make sure that the device isn't /dev/mouse but instead /dev/input/mice which is also spoken about in the readme.
You may also need to change the 'buttons' option. Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log to see whether the default number of buttons have been selected (usually 3) as you will need to register 5 buttons to use the ZAxisMapping "45" option:
