mgetty problem

Hello,

I'm hoping you can help me here - I'm pretty much new to Linux and have been working on a little project for a couple of months now.

I'm using a single board computer with a gprs module on it - basically I want to dial into the unit and log in remotely.

I can make a connection, but everthing I type on my windows PC (Hyperterminal) is just being displayed on the minicom screen on the SBC.

I have a mgetty enabled on the serial port (/dev/ttyS0), but am not getting a login prompt, so clearly I'm doing something wrong!.

As I said, my Linux knowledge isn't great, so I'm probably making some silly mistakes and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction ... I'm sure there's a light at the end of the tunnel - it's just been switched off temporarily!!!!

Can't say I really understand how you're trying to do this (never tried anything like that), but the best way to get command-line access to a Linux box is using SSH. It's secure, and many distros will have an SSH server set up (and possibly even running) out of the box. Windows doesn't come with a client, but PuTTY is reliable.

-- although I missed the phrase "dial in" on my first reading of your post, so it would probably not work. Is this of any use?

Rob
