maximun address space for a process

different distros and machines have various maximun address space for a process. I wrote a program (that all it does what to malloc a node into a linear linked list infinitely) to find out the maximun address space for a process but that program is killed by OOM killer. I was hoping when malloc == NULL the program would stop and exit out of the loop. but it didn't, the program got kill/terminated.

is there anyway that i can find out about maximum address space of a process ? (perhaps without having the using the bruised force mentioned above and yet still failed to deal with malloc == NULL on some distros & machines)

The size of the address space depends less upon the distribution but rather upon the kernel configuration (at least on the i386). Read this article: High Memory In The Linux Kernel

But are you sure you want to know the available address space and not the available virtual memory?
