man pages don't display

Hi,
I recently upgraded from RH7.3 to 8.0. When run "man" from a console, it seems to go into a "less" screen but there is no text visible. If a do man on a garbage topic, I get "no manual topic on xxx" so I know the man pages are there. Suggestions?
thanks

Please give us some additional information:

contents of /usr/etc/man.config
contents of MANPATH environment variable (usually just type manpath at CLI)
