lstart without password

Hi, I'm debian Sarge user. My computer is stand alone in my room. No internet. Something disturb my daily activity is 'LOGIN'. I want to use my computer without permission at all, without question. Just 'bleep' and the Xwindows goes face to face in front of me.

I've ever used KDM in automatic style. But, is there other solution for this situation without KDM? I use minimalistic window manager (Oroborus).

I tried to remove XDM link file under /etc/rc2.d and made simple script with bash script, USER.sh :

login -f USER

and then added this line in inittab

1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty -n -l /usr/local/sbin/USER.sh 38400 tty1

it did't work at all. My computer won't start login prompt. I have to Alt-F2 or another F to log in.

Anyone can help? Thank You

Welcome to LQ!

This forum is just for introducing yourself. That question should be posed in a new thread in the Debian forum.

Since LQ has over 2,000,000 (yes, two million!) posts, most of our questions when we first start can probably be answered by either a LQ Search or a Google <Linux> search.

Please also checkout these areas of LinuxQuestions.org for more good information:

Setting up a computer with no login required is a REALLY bad idea. We can make a long list of ways in which someone can get private data if you do this.

I think he knows the risks, or does not care, and instead wants to know how this can be done. So instead of lecturing him, maybe people could put out some technical answers?

EDIT: Look into replacing your getty with mingetty (or mgetty), which I believe has an autologin option to throw a user through. I imagine the "fancier" GUI login managers (like gdm) also have such an option, so I would try to find their man pages to see if it is worth installing.

Yes, but you could replace getty with mingetty, in a similar way as when you tried to replace the getty with a login script. Just have that line point to the mingetty path instead of the normal getty one, and pass the autologin username as necessary.
