Hello and thanks in advance for any help My wife and I have our own computers. Hers is a Windows Xp Pro box and mine as of right now has Windows 98SE on it. I want to switch over to Linux on mine because I have been sick of Windows for quite some time but I know absolutely squat about Linux. I have talked to people and read a little bit online and haven't gotten the answers I need. I hope someone here can help.
All I do on my system is browse, play games at pogo.com, and play Full Tilt Poker. I want to know if pogo and Full Tilt can be played with Linux, and if so what is the simplest distribution Linux I can use? I don't need excess programs and whatnot to clutter up my system. All I want is a browser and to be able to play at the two sites I mentioned. That's it. That's why when I was reading here that LFS caught my attention. If LFS is not what I need please redirect me to a better place.
I also need to know if Linux works with Linksys routers and Logitech optical mice. May sound like a stupid thing to ask but I am NOT a puter guru. I just want security and simplicity. I am SICK of having to do more maintenance on Windows than actually getting to use the puter for what i bought it for.
Rob,
If you are very new to this, LFS is not for you - it is not a route for the newbie and has a very, very steep learning curve. I would recommend using Ubuntu with a minimal install - because it is very friendly to those who are not guru's.
In terms of the sites working, I would start of by trying them under Firefox in windows, if they are okay there, they are probably good under Linux. I suspect that once on Linux you will need to install the Adobe Flash 9 player for Linux for web games.
A logitech optical mouse should be absolutely no problem, and the router - if external/standalone (connected to the machine with ethernet or wireless) should be fine.
One point that you should be a little aware of is if you are using wifi - which can be a bit awkward depending on who's chipset you have.
Cheers,
Danny
