loop-back, persistent or /home?

Hi

I guess my question is which system is 'best' for regular LiveCd? loop-back, persistent-image or /home? I have tried persistent-image but couldn't get it to work on the usb-stick, prolly my inexperience.

I have been running a LiveCd of Ubuntu on my works machine without anyone noticing Unfortunately the machine only has 750Mb ram so Ubuntu 10.04 struggled and fell over a couple of times. OpenSUSE got me to a blank screen. Fedora fell over slightly less often than Ubuntu10.04. I haven't tried Wolvix (yet). Ubuntu 9.04 has most of the tools i need by default (Gimp and i can easily add SciTe or something).

Ubuntu feels like the wrong tool because it is tooo heavy but at least i have an official Cd (free) in case i get noticed by my boss. I do have an official Wolvix Cub Cd but haven't tried it here yet because i don't want to risk losing the Cd (its got the repos on it). Losing the Ubuntu Cd would only mean "spreading the word" which is why i got the Ubuntu Cd in the first place.

Ok, running a LiveCd means using a persistent image or loop-back system or perhaps a /home on a separate Usb-stick. Right now i only have a 2Gb Usb-stick but hope to get something a bit larger soon. I guess 16Gb would be the easiest way of having a straight /home? I find Ubuntu needs about 10Gb (just for /home) to be comfortable.

Regards from Tom

OK
so you want LiveCD persistence on CD with Ubuntu?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD/Persistence

so, from what your saying you want to create a persistent partition
on a 16gb usb?

Just use Gparted, format the usb as ext3 and label it "casper-rw"

or

assuming usb is /dev/sdb1

Code:
sudo mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -L casper-rw /dev/sdb1
in terminal

when you boot the cd at boot menu press TAB and enter "persistent"
anywhere on the boot command line...

For a lighter weight Ubuntu try my nFluxOS 10.04 or 10.10 editions
at my site...

you also said you were open to using other distro's
but what features are most important to you?
what purpose will it have?
just general web browsing or what?

Hi

I guess i am looking for a comparison between the 3 different methods so that i can try to work out which would suit my situation better. I have found that other distros can handle persistent but sometimes "casper-rw" needs to be something else.

What is a loop-back system? Is it a compressed file similar to the persistent image? Can a loop-back system be used from different distros? Can a persistent image be accessed from different distro (after the "casper-rw" issue is dealt with)?

Your link was to the instructions page i tried for a persistent image but it didn't work for me on 9.04 and i don't know if it was something i didn't do right or perhaps something odd about the usb-stick or something. I did try using ext3 and then ext2 but neither worked.

I have posted a separate question about which distro to choose
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...55#post4054055
but seem to be getting some unhelpful answers although it's difficult to know how to answer such a vague question.

Regards from
Tom
